Changing the Scene: Improving the School Nutrition Environment
| Save the Date Fit,
Healthy and Eager to Learn: Teaming Up for Kids' Success
Join us April 4 and 5, 2002 at the Trumbull
Marriott for the first statewide intensive conference on Coordinated
School Health Programs (CSHP), sponsored by the State Departments of
Education, Public Health, and Children and Families, the University of
Connecticut and the New England Dairy and Food Council. This conference is
intended to help teams of school and community partners work together to
improve the health and learning of Connecticut's children. Nationally
renowned speakers will address a variety of topics including the benefits
of CSHP, the relationship of health to academic achievement, action steps
for implementing the CSHP model in local school districts, and promoting
good nutrition and physical activity for children. Look for the conference
brochure and registration packet to be mailed by early February 2002.

USDA developed Changing the Scene: Improving the
School Nutrition Environment, to help schools identify ways in which they
might improve the nutrition environment, by incorporating the concepts of
healthy eating into the overall school day.
Whether you are a parent,
school administrator, teacher, school foodservice employee or other concerned
member of the community, this guide will assist in examining your school's
nutrition environment, develop a plan for improvement and put the plan into
action. By getting involved now, you can make a big difference ‑ in children's
energy and readiness to learn today; in their health and productivity as adults;
and in their success and well‑being throughout their lives.
Changing the Scene
evaluates school environments on the basis of six components, including:
 |
A Commitment to
Nutrition and Physical Activity; |
 |
Quality School
Meals; |
 |
Other Healthy Food
Options; |
 |
Pleasant Eating
Experiences; |
 |
Nutrition
Education; and |
 |
Marketing. |
|
The kit includes many
support materials, such as an improvement checklist, fact sheets and samples of
the kinds of materials you may want to develop.
| HSNE Presentations, Workshops and
Exhibits SDE's Team Nutrition Grant includes
opportunities for state associations/organizations to help motivate school
leaders to implement the HSNE Initiative at the local level, through
presentations, workshops and exhibits at state conferences. This concept
is being promoting through an action kit developed by USDA, entitled
Changing the Scene: Improving the School Nutrition Environment (see
enclosed handout).
The goal of these presentations is to enhance statewide
HSNE implementation by (1) providing information, training and resources
on HSNE, and; (2) motivating and empowering key leaders to implement HSNE
at the local level.
From Spring 2002 through Summer 2003, SDE's Team
Nutrition staff will be available to conduct HSNE workshops at your annual
state conferences/meetings. Each HSNE workshop will be tailored to address
the needs of your specific target group.
To schedule a workshop, please contact Susan Fiore at
(860) 807-2075 or Colleen Thompson at (860) 486-1787. |
Other resources include a
video to help educate audiences about a healthy school nutrition environment, a
PowerPoint® presentation to use when talking to groups and urging
them to join your team, a set of transparencies of the PowerPoint®
slides and a hard copy of the presentation script. The kit also includes a
brochure, The School Environment, Helping Students Learn to Eat Healthy. All of
the kit's resources are provided on a CDROM, as well.
Changing the Scene is
