Hello everyone!

Many PTAs hold an annual election in the spring, toward the end of the school year. Late winter is a good time to start thinking about the election process.

“It’s a nice touch to install newly elected PTA leaders with a ceremony, which should recognize the former office
holders, the new office holders, and those who continue in office.”

The rules governing a PTA’s election can be found in the bylaws that are adopted by its members and in the current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised. It is important for PTA Leaders to be aware of these rules because they are designed to ensure fair elections.

The election process starts with the formation of a nominating committee who is responsible for finding suitable people to fill the various offices for which the election is to be held. Members of the nominating committee should be familiar with your PTA’s activities and should be given a copy of your bylaws and a membership list.

According to Robert’s Rules:

	The members of a nominating committee should be elected, not appointed by your general membership or your board.
	Any member can serve on the committee except for the current President, who is not allowed to participate in the nominating process/committee and should never attend its meetings, or try to influence the committee in any way.
	A member from the nominating committee can also be nominated for an open office but should be excused from the room while their nomination is being considered.
	The nominating committee is dissolved once the slate of nominees is presented to the members for the election.
	Before a vote can be taken, a call for nominations from the floor is required.
	The specific voting process that should be followed during your election should be defined in your bylaws.

It’s a nice touch to install newly elected PTA leaders with a ceremony, which should recognize the former office holders, the new office holders and those who continue in office. CT PTA and National PTA have many ideas and suggestions on installation programs, which can be found at their websites.

The 104th Annual PTA Convention is May 7 and 8 at the Southbury Hilton Hotel. Presidents and officers will be receiving the registration packet this month. I hope that everyone will share this information with your entire membership and encourage them to visit the state convention. Attendees will be treated to outstanding speakers, workshops, a luncheon, and networking opportunities. Exhibitors will be on hand with fundraising ideas, art and music programs, safety products, educational tools, gifts, and samples.

PTA award recognizes and honors those volunteers in our community who promote and encourage the essence of PTA . . . everychild. onevoice. Application forms will be included in the convention packet or can be obtained online at ctpta.org. We have many important issues to discuss concerning the children of Connecticut.
